We’ve have a winner! Two winners actually.  The contest was so close we awarded prizes to the top two teams.

The contest ran from June through September. Six teams hunted for official city plaques at designated Landmarks throughout the city to try to win autographed copies of Madison history books by David Mollenhoff and Stuart Levitan. After reviewing all the submissions it was clear that two teams made it to nearly every landmark site.  There are 179 designated Landmarks (well, 181 now). 154 of them had plaques by the end of the contest.

Bonnie Benson had photos of herself taken with 153 official plaques. Meggen Heuss and Markus Candinas photographed themselves with 152 of them. Both teams missed the marker at Hoyt Park, and the Heuss/Candinas team missed a newly installed marker at Luther Memorial Church on University Ave. This is the marker that put Benson over the top.

Markus Candinas (left) and Meggen Heuss visited nearly every Landmark site in the city and were awarded a prize as runners-up.

Benson was declared the first place winner and was awarded autographed copies of the two books. But the exhaustive effort of Heuss and Candinas could not be ignored.  They went so far as to submit photos of themselves at the Landmarks that didn’t have plaques, just to show they were there.  And they found nearly every site.

All teams clearly had fun and learned about Madison’s history and the places that put history right in front of us.

Below are some of our favorite photos from all the contestants!
